I have been working on the script a musical theater production. The Flower Lady is shorter in stature, older, with many children she’s raised; she speaks in a gruff, straightforward manner.
The Queen who can’t have kids meets the Flower Lady who can remedy that with flowers and a bit of magic. But she asks the queen why she would want to exchange all her peace and quiet for the mess and chaos of raising kids.
‘Queenie’ sings her reply in her solo song ‘A Child of my Own.’
‘Flower Lady’ starts singing her retort in ‘Children’:
CHILDREN, THEIR GRUBBY HANDS SMEARING THEIR MASTERPIECES UP AND DOWN YOUR WALLS, ALMIGHTY CHILDREN
Eventually leading to:
MY CHILDREN HAVE BROUGHT ME MORE THAN I CAN HANDLE; SHOWN ME MORE THAN I CAN SEE; HELPED ME BECOME THE PERSON THAT I AM
Part of my approach in the flower lady’s character is to have her speak in idioms – floral idioms. In my research I came across this site and had some chuckles: https://www.pinterest.com/explore/funny-parent-quotes/
I especially related to this one – though I do wish many times I could more adroitly do so:
‘If parenthood came with a GPS it would mostly just say: RECALCULATING.”
