Peter and I were driving up to Waterville Valley last Saturday morning when NPR started broadcasting John McCain’s funeral at the National Cathedral. His daughter, Meghan McCain, gave her eulogy. Though I never voted for the man I always sensed he was someone one could honor. We began to lose signal so when we stopped at the local coffee shop I stayed in the car moving parking spots chasing the signal.

My heart heard what it secretly yearned to hear:

“The America of John McCain is generous and welcoming and bold. She is resourceful and confident and secure. She meets her responsibilities; she speaks quietly because she is strong. America does not boast because she has no need to.The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great.” Extended – and I do mean extennnnnded – applause.

Thank you, McCains.
